The approach

What is Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy?

Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy, or CBH, brings together ideas and methods from cognitive behavioural therapy and evidence-based hypnosis.

How we work

A clear process for making change portable

The work moves from understanding the pattern to applying and maintaining a more useful response.

One tool within therapy

What hypnosis is — and what it isn’t

It is

A collaborative way of focusing attention and using imagination and suggestion deliberately. In CBH it may make imagery and rehearsal more vivid, deepen relaxation, practise coping responses, strengthen helpful suggestions or teach self-hypnosis.

It isn’t

Unconsciousness or handing over control. You can hear what is being said and reject suggestions you do not want to follow.

The practitioner

About Ian Boyle

I’m a qualified Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapist trained with the UK College of Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy. My approach is practical, collaborative and curious.

Before moving into therapy, my background was in engineering, and I have a degree in mechatronics. That still influences the way I approach problems: practically, with curiosity, and with an interest in how different parts of a system interact.

Over time my interests increasingly moved towards human behaviour, physiology, psychology and the processes involved in meaningful personal change. That eventually led me to Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy, and I continue to develop my knowledge and training in cognitive behavioural approaches.

I’m particularly interested in how thoughts, learned behaviours, attention, emotion and physiology interact, and in turning that understanding into things a client can actually practise.

I do not view hypnosis as mind control or as a mysterious state in which the therapist fixes the client. I see it as one useful method for focused attention, imagery, rehearsal and suggestion within a broader therapeutic process.

My aim is to help clients understand their own patterns well enough that therapy increasingly becomes something they can do for themselves.

Sessions

The first step is an initial consultation so we can understand your concern, explore what may be maintaining it, and agree what the work would involve.

Together, we’ll clarify your goals and create a treatment plan that suits you. We can then review both your progress and the treatment plan as the work develops.

In-person sessions are available at The Heart Wings in Lucan, Dublin, with online sessions also available.

Common questions

Straight answers about hypnosis and therapy

Will I lose control in hypnosis?

No. Hypnosis is collaborative. You remain capable of deciding what you do and do not want to engage with.

Will I be unconscious?

No. Hypnosis is not sleep or unconsciousness. People commonly remain aware of what is happening and what is being said.

Do I have to be good at hypnosis?

People vary in responsiveness, and responsiveness can improve with practice. As you become more familiar with focusing your attention, using imagery and responding to suggestion, self-hypnosis can become easier and more useful.

Is therapy just hypnosis?

No. We first understand and work with the cognitive and behavioural patterns maintaining the problem. Hypnosis can then be used to rehearse, strengthen and reinforce more helpful ways of thinking, feeling and responding.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the issue, your goals and how the work progresses. CBH is designed to be a focused, relatively brief approach, and for many straightforward concerns around 4–6 sessions can be a useful starting estimate. We review progress together rather than committing you to a fixed number in advance.

Will I have things to practise between sessions?

Usually, yes. Self-monitoring, relaxation, self-hypnosis, behavioural practice, thought records or other exercises may be used to help transfer learning into everyday life.

Suitability & safety

Is this the right kind of therapy for you?

CBH is collaborative and requires active participation. An initial consultation is used to understand your goals, relevant history, current circumstances and whether this approach is suitable.

Some presentations require specialist, medical or other mental-health support rather than, or before, hypnotherapy. If there are concerns about suitability, I will discuss them with you openly.
